A Day Seminar on
"Designing Useful Language Tests"

English teaching staffs of Engineering Department followed one-day seminar on Designing Useful Language Test conducted by Atmajaya university. This seminar was led by Prof. Dr. Adrian Palmer from Department of Linguistics, University of Utah, USA. He is also the writer of Language Testing in Practice.
This seminar was talking about how English Lecturers can design language tests which are reliable and useful to measure the achievement of students in studying English. There are four (4) qualities of useful language test, they are (1) Reliability means the consistency of measurement, (2) Construct Validity means the meaningfulness of the unerpretations that we make on the besis of test scores, (3) Authenticity means the degree of correspondence between the characteristics of a given test task and the characteristics of a relevant non-test language use task and (4) Beneficial Impact means the desired effects that creating a test, administering and taking a test, and using test results have on individuals and systems.
This seminar gave a good advantage for English Lecturers especially for Lecturers at Engineering Department. They sometimes find difficulties in designing test for their students because the language must be telated to technical knowledge and terms which are applicable to the job.
